– continuing the review of my friend’s book…
Jeff Brown discovered Jesus was God at his new birth. Chapter 2 in his book is all about this discovery. For without discovering Jesus as The Christ, there can be no solid foundation to your Christian Life.
Jeff mentioned that other sects have a different Jesus, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons. Although I have respect for many of the people, some of the claims that they believe are ridiculous.
For instance, Mormons believe their founder Joseph Smith found sacred scrolls and reburied them in the mountains of upper New York state at the command of angels. And of course he did this, without anybody else being able to see them. Furthermore he claimed that he was able to interpret them through miraculous glasses that somehow don’t exist anymore either. These kind of outlandish claims border on the absurd.
The claims of Jesus are not so. He was experienced by witnesses and confirmed by history. Pointing out solid facts like these makes Jeff’s book on discipleship strong.
When Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say that I am?” He asked the critical key to any true foundation of faith. And the only true answer is the one that Peter gave. And so Jeff refers to this.
Recognizing Jesus’ true identity is the solid rock of spirituality. As Jeff points out, John in the Book of John and in First John clarifies that this is the case maker for anyone to draw closer to God. Who is Jesus and do you know Him as God?
Yes, then there’s still the important point of the doctrine of the Trinity. And boldly Jeff addresses this tough subject in his discipleship book. Jeff points out that the New Testament refers to the Godhead, but this is only in three verses (Acts 17:29, Romans 1:20, Colossians 2:9) and only in three versions (KJV, NKJV, ASV). So I think it wiser to base this discipleship teaching primarily on the strongest verse to build a Trinitarian position. And this verse is when Jesus was baptized and the Father spoke & the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove.
Even though a hard position to defend, it is critical for a new Christian to realize the solvency of monotheism – through trinitarian doctrine. And to realize this, the most challenging point is understanding The Father – Son and Holy Ghost in the one God. The fact that Jesus truly was God is most strongly supported, as Jeff points out: In that Jesus Himself claimed it, and taught it, and will reveal it to you today!
Jesus Said He was The Way – The Truth and the Life and that was & is THE TRUTH!
