WARNING: THIS IS A BIBLE STUDY. IF YOU ARE OPPOSED TO SUCH; DO NOT READ, THIS IS NOT FOR YOU UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR LIFE CHANGED BY THE STUDY OF THE SCRIPTURE.
The Word in The Life of A Christian.
The purpose of our lesson today: A Closer look at Psalm 119, 120 & 121 & God’s Word in our lives…
An examination of: A Believer’s life is hidden and found in the Word.
1- 81 My soul faints with longing for your salvation,
but I have put my hope in your word.
People put their hope in all kinds of things; their money, their job, their possessions, their influence and etc. But the Bible indicates that the soul that knows God longs first and foremost for Him. That it is God’s word. That it is God himself, that is the greatest longing of their life.
How do we work on making God our first and foremost. What gets our time gets us! Spend more time with God. Read His word more. Think about Him, meditate on His truth. Have a daily focus time when God is the center point.
2- 93 I will never forget your precepts,
for by them you have preserved my life.
When someone is dumped into perilous waters, the surest way to save them is with a life preserver. God’s word is the Christian’s life jacket. Like salt preserves food from spoiling. God’s word preserves us from the corruption in this world. His word keeps the good in us and is the best thing we can put in us to keep the life from coming out of us is God’s word.
3- 97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
I saw a booklet one time that had a guy “doing his devotions;” watching his watch going 5,4,3,2,1… Obviously counting down the seconds until his devotions were over. Some people look at spiritual worship this way and miss the whole point. Devotion is not just contemplating God’s law but passionately studying God’s law and earnestly learning it.
4- 98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,
for they are ever with me.
The neatest thing about God’s word is not just that it is worth staying with. But that if we plant God’s word in our heart; it stays with us. And not just lingers but grows. God’s word is a miraculous transforming power that turns us into something greater than what we can be without it.
5- 99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
God does not mean for us to read His word like we read a textbook. God means for us to read His word like a secret treasure map. Pouring over each word, seeking hidden meaning, gleaning high and holy knowledge from it. For the study of His word can make us more knowledgeable than all the school books in the world put together.
6- 100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts. Some information you store in computers is “read only.” That means that you can only read it you can not change it. And in the sense that we can not change the message it presents. Its message can change us. If we apply His word through obedience, it becomes not only knowledge but life.
7- 104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path. God’s word not only puts truth in us but it takes error out of us. God’s word causes us to see and know wrong paths and if followed prevents us from straying down them.
8- 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light for my path.
This world is a dark lonely place and is a danger to travel without a clear light. And God’s word is the clearest light that one can have. His word is the surest light to make plain the paths we must travel in this life. It not only shines in us but it shines before us to show us the way.
9 – 111 Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
The world finds pleasures in all kinds of things. Often, the things people find pleasure in are the very things that are the worst for them. Not so with God’s Word. When we find our greatest pleasure in His word, we are finding joy in the very best thing for our good.
10 – 112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees
to the very end. We live in a world where commitments are casual. “Make up to break up that’s all we do.” The words of this song so clearly portray the worst failure of our hearts. But God’s word is not a treasure that can be casually found. The wonder of God’s truth can only be realized by a committed heart.
11 – 120 My flesh trembles in fear of you;
I stand in awe of your laws. God’s truth can be likened to the awesome power of the atom. When properly respected, it can fill our life with energy and amazing benefits. But when handled flippantly, it can explosively destroy. God’s word when studied reverently can yield great good. But God is not to be trifled with. When not viewed in awe and reverence, He can be a fearsome Judge and King.
12 – 133 Direct my footsteps according to your word;
let no sin rule over me. God’s word not only reveals human error but when applied, also deals with it. God’s word not only diagnoses the problem but also solves it. God’s word is both thermometer and prescription.
13 – 140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested,
and your servant loves them.
Nobody likes being a guinea pig. And God’s word is not just some new fangled idea or latest notion that someone thinks might be good. God’s word has changed lives for thousands of years and is tried and true. The scripture says taste and see that the Lord is good. And that is the best advice with God’s word. Try it; you will like it.
14 – 164 Seven times a day I praise you
for your righteous laws.
No-one would expect to try a new diet one day a week and expect results. But somehow that is exactly the way some people treat God’s word. God’s word only yields it greatest blessings when applied daily. God’s word is like water. It is the fluid of life. One can not be healthy, without daily doses.
15 – 165 Great peace have they who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble.
Balance is one of the greatest secrets in every part of life. God’s word gives us balance, to help us safely stand in the storms of life. A gymnast can not stay on the beam without balance. A wrestler can not make good moves without good balance. A climber can not assure his footing without balance. Balance is key to any endeavor. And God’s word is the surest ingredient to give us balance in this walk of life.
16 – 168 I obey your precepts and your statutes,
for all my ways are known to you.
We not only know God’s word; God’s word also knows us. The scripture says He is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart. We follow the scriptures because we want to know Him. But also because, we know He already knows us. Not following God’s word is like a new owner not following the instruction manual for their new car.
17 – 174 I long for your salvation, O LORD,
and your law is my delight.
Try not drinking water for a day and see if you look forward to it tomorrow. It is so critical to our life that we know we can not live without it. Yet people are so spiritually out of touch that they try to live without the water of life. Remember the purpose of these lessons was to show up how the scriptures make us wise unto salvation. Notice, this verse teaches if we want salvation; we will long for His word.
18 – 176 I have strayed like a lost sheep.
Seek your servant,
for I have not forgotten your commands.
We not only find God through His word. But through His word, He finds us… “We all like sheep have gone astray and the Lord has laid on Him the sin of us all.”
19 – Psalm 120
1 I call on the LORD in my distress,
and he answers me.
Joke: Is anyone else up there???
Dr. Francis Schaeffer. The God who is there and who does care! and He shows us this through His word.
The whole next Psalm carries on this thought.
20 – Psalm 121
The Lord watches over us through His word. In the New Testament the Holy Spirit is referred to as the divine paraclete. One who goes along side. One who helps with. He is our Comforter and Helper.
1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
5 The LORD watches over you—
the LORD is your shade at your right hand; 6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night. 7 The LORD will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life; 8 the LORD will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
The Lord watches over us through His Word.
