Our topic this morning
is the burning bush
a type of the New Testament Church
the burning bush a type of the New
Testament Church Dawn and I have talked about this message.
There’s so much here that I literally
could do what I did with Psalms 23 and make many messages out of the one.
It’s just that rich. I’m normally a
topical preacher but this is very much scriptural exegesis. or scriptural teachong & sharing.
The burning bush is something that
all Christians and Believers are aware of and have heard the story and read the accounts of
as Justin read to us this morning we
picked out two of the major verses
Exodus 3 chapter chapter 3 verse 4 and 5
when the Lord saw that he turned aside
to look God Called to him from the midst
of the Bush and said Moses Moses and he
said here I am
and then he said do not come near me
remove your sandals from your feet for
the place on which you are standing is
Holy Ground and Deuteronomy 33 verse 16.
with the best gifts of the earth and its
Bounty and the favor of the one who
appeared in the burning bush
I didn’t really realize that the burning
bush is mentioned six different times in
the Bible I had ready to put in your
bulletins all six of those scriptures
but it won’t happen until next week
because there’s so much to say we’re not
going to finish talking about the
burning bush this morning but we’re
going to continue next week and we’ll
talk about the bush still Burns
but we’re going to focus on the burning
bush as a type of the New Testament
Church and what I mean by that
you know I it’s hard to imagine
the thoughts and the feelings of Moses
the sight of this Burning Bush
as he was traveling out in the
wilderness he saw this site and the
scripture says he turned aside
well I do that a lot in the woods I see
something a little unusual and I turned
aside I’m gonna bring a little treasure
on soon that I found a couple years ago
I called it the deer gate
and it was a it was a tree bowed like
Heaven’s Gates and it died in uh and so
I’m going to take it home and do
something with it but when you see
something unusual out in nature you know
it certainly you turned aside to look
and it was kind of like that uh
Moses saw a bush burning
and he turned aside to look at caught
his interest caught his eye it didn’t
seem to be burning up
it interested me and it it’s quite
important I think
that it is named what kind of bush it
was that was burning that Moses saw it
was a thorn bush
well I thought that you an unusual
little [ __ ] you know if I was God I’d
probably want to pick the biggest
prettiest Bush there was but this was a
thorn bush course a rose is a thorn bush
and that’s a pretty Bush but at any rate
it was a thorn bush the scripture
specifically names that
and you know the first thing I want us
to think about is when Moses turned
aside and he saw this site the bush
burning in the Old Testament please
remember
that this was Moses introduction
to God
he knew his people had a God he was with
them in Egypt you know he he slew one of
the the Egyptians who was roughly
treating the Jews and he knew he was a
Jew so he knew his people had a God but
Moses had never really met him Moses had
never really confronted this God of his
people the Jews that wasn’t something
that had happened and I don’t know that
Moses was thinking when he saw this bush
oh there’s God
but as he turned aside as the scripture
says
the God spoke to him from the bush now
boy he knew it was God then
and what an experience that would be to
turn aside and see a fire in a bush and
and and then a voice come to you from
from the burning bush I mean get this
picture in your mind just how amazing
this is and I understand this was Pastor
country this was rough terrain so it
wasn’t that he was in the middle of the
Woods by any means and uh at any rate he
saw this bush burning he turned aside
and God spoke to him he turned aside and
says and God called
to him
called to him
in other words come here
Moses Moses
it’s by name called him by name
well if you’re out in the wilderness
with the sheep
and somebody calls your name and there’s
nobody else around wow you know that’s
quite an experience
and Moses said here
I am
isn’t that the first responsibility of a
Believer to God
when he speaks to us to to say Here I Am
you want me don’t have to look any
further right here I am I’m Yours
anyway that’s what Moses said
and then even though the voice from the
bush had called out to Moses Moses Moses
you know kind of come here the voice
stopped him and said don’t come any
closer
the ground you’re on is Holy Ground take
off your sandals
be barefoot
in front of me
I’m still scratching my head over that
most of the reading I’ve done about it
indicates that God didn’t want any
interference between he and Moses and so
he was barefoot so that there wouldn’t
be anything in the in the way no no
leather nothing getting in the way of
the contact of the earth you remember
that training I did with us that makes
some sense
uh thinking about my karate training I
train my students to to get power from
what’s around us that God lives and
moves in our environments especially the
Earth anyway so I’m trying to imagine
why God told Moses to get Barefoot but
it had to do with it was holy
ground
well what made it Holy Ground I’m gonna
tell you
God was there that’s what made it Holy
Ground
and you know we don’t talk about this
Holiness message a whole lot anymore but
the reason that Jesus came probably
foremost above anything else was to
restore the possibility of wholeness and
holiness
to the children of God
you know through the work of Adam and
the work of Flesh however you want to
perceive or talk about that people had a
distance in them at that time and today
from God
and in order to
come into the presence of God you’ve got
to understand that God is Holy the the
author of Hebrews says the Lord our God
is a consuming fire
that’s powerful I remember talking to a
man named Blair Reed who ran the House
of Prayer which was a recovery center
for alcoholics and he’d quote that
passage to you every time you talk to
him the Lord Our God’s a consuming fire
the Lord our God is a consuming fire
in other words God is so pure God Is So
intensely righteous God Is So Perfect
God Is So holy God is so just that it’s
like the sun except more intense
you know and Corruption it’s not really
that
God’s being mean it’s just that he’s
pure
and impurity can’t survive in his
presence
so when Jesus came and lived a righteous
holy life without the impurities
that other humans have lived and then as
a perfect spotless lamb offered his
sacrifice on the cross
the righteous dying for the unrighteous
the price the penalty was paid for
mankind by a man
but a unclean man couldn’t pay its or
righteous man did gave his very life
ah now we’re getting to why the thorn
bush
because of pain because of the crown of
thorns because of the sacrifice of Jesus
God always speaks to us through Christ
and even way back
when Moses saw the burning bush
God was speaking to him through Christ
the reason it was a thorn bush was
because of the pain and the suffering of
Jesus which was being foreshadowed in
this very important contact
Moses reaching out to God here I am
here’s who I am I’m the god of Abraham
Isaac Jacob he identified himself
he didn’t just sound God so Moses could
think well and I wonder who God is on
I’m the god of your forefathers that’s
who I am you know when God does that
God doesn’t leave us unclear God defines
himself Jesus was very clear when he
lived I’m the way the truth and the life
no one comes to the father but by me he
didn’t leave any uncertain terms about
it he made it very clear want to come to
God come through me that’s why I came so
you can find God easily see who he is I
came as a man so you could see the
example of a man I died as a man to pay
the price
for your sins you owed it I paid it
that’s what it came for wow
so literally I believe that when God
spoke to Moses through this Burning Bush
it was a foreshadowing of Christ
it was a foreshadowing of the price that
would be paid and the reason that God
could speak to Moses was because of what
he was going to do through Christ on the
cross the reason it was a thorny Bush
because he’d already planned for his son
to come suffer for you and I and the way
that God speaks to us today is through
that sacrifice of his son Jesus and even
way back in the burning bush God was
already foreshadowing what he would do
to reach us through his son Jesus
so I believe
that when
Moses heard God
he heard Jesus
it was Jesus speaking to him through the
burning bush
Jesus was going to reach out and save
his people
the scripture says I’ve heard your
Affliction I’ve heard your bitter
bondage I’ve heard what’s going on and
how the Egyptians are mistreating you
and I’m sending you Moses you’re going
to be the deliverer wow
God can use a man to help other men and
women get out of their bondage
and so God used Moses
and he spoke to him I believe through
Christ through foreshadowing of Christ
the bush burning
all those years ago next week we’re
going to have those six verses so you
can read them all yourself that’s pretty
significant to me
that it’s mentioned in six different
places in the Bible
how did the father speak his love to us
through Christ’s suffering therefore a
thorny Bush was on fire and you can see
Christ in the thorny bush
the burning bush
why was it burning several reasons we
talked a little bit about this Holiness
was burning and Moses couldn’t get any
closer because Christ hadn’t sacrificed
his life yet the work wasn’t done it it
was foreshadowed to find the mind of the
father it was done and in the mind of
Christ it was done he knew he would come
he knew he would pay that ultimate price
for you and I to be restored to be
brought into the possibility of Holiness
but before that time he came into the
image of the father in your own flesh
just like you come into the presence of
the sun you’re going to be burned up
it’s not a
it’s not harsh it’s just factual
impurity cannot survive in the presence
of our holy beautiful lovely Mighty
wonderful God
so he had a plan to clean us up
he had a clan to plan to make us whole
present us to his father
that’s why we’re called the bride of
Christ because we join Jesus we’re made
one with Jesus we’re made one with the
father through Christ and this is
foreshadowed even through the burning
bush why Barefoot there are no barriers
anymore because Christ took the barriers
between us and God and he got rid of
them on the tree
oh man that was a burning Jesus flesh
offered on the cross
but it was going to allow another
burning the coming of the Holy Spirit
the power of the Holy Spirit to come
inside the hearts of his people and to
purge them and purify them and make them
suited and fit for the king the Eternal
King the Lord God Almighty the the the
god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob that’s
with whom we have to do and he was Holy
Ground
he’s entirely pure he’s entirely sacred
and so
Moses got a feel of that there wasn’t
even leather on his feet to get in the
way
and he felt more than the ground
he felt The God Who had called him to
that place speaking to him
and even though it says he looked away
Moses was afraid to look you ever been
so close to God
that you were afraid to look
that’s called holy fear
it’s not an unclean unnatural mysterious
weird fear man I get so sick of all this
stuff on TV this black dark gloomy
wretched stuff golly
but if you ever get a vision of how
great and how glorious and how Mighty
and how holy is this God with whom we
have to do you won’t fear fear any of
that worldly mess because the fear of
God will cleanse you
from evil
fear God’s holy love him just true
just clean
you know sometimes I’m getting to be a
little older I got these
problems with my skin from medication
reactions and stuff and I can get that
water as hot as I can stand it and
that’s it feels good
he cleanses God cleanses us through the
work on the cross through the work of
the Holy Spirit
and the Lord our God is a consuming fire
but we couldn’t do it
we had a problem we couldn’t solve
death is going to harvest us all
are we ready to come in contact and
communication with this perfect pure
holy Majestic Mighty lovely beautiful
holy God
well that’s what God allows through
Christ we come to him we receive him and
he cleans us from the inside out and
instead of our instead of our filthy
rags God sees the purity of the life of
his son and we can enter his holy
presence through Christ Christ through
us
in other words Moses got a taste of
Jesus
way back at the burning bush
but it was his work
Moses didn’t set the fire
all Moses did
was Saul who God was
and what God was going to do
interesting that he always applies that
to you
and to me Moses is what I want you to do
oh my God you by the way God doesn’t
mind you telling much problems
I mean he wanted Moses to be stronger
than he was but Moses was Moses he had
some problems he was afraid to speak he
had stammering lips
so he said okay I’ll give you somebody
else to go with you to help you
you can tell God what’s on your heart
you don’t have to be perfect to come
into His presence it’s receiving his
Perfection his work that he did
that makes us right
not something we can do on our own I’ve
got a very special friend I won’t name
her but we Fellowship a lot she sends me
devotional material every day she uses
another word I couldn’t remember what it
is but she speaks of herself as a
conduit
it’s never her never heard never heard
ever it’s always God always God always
God and that’s the deal
if he cleanses us he can use us as a
conduit he supplies the fire he is the
fire he is the flame he cleanses us
inside out
you see what God does for us it was
foreshadowed
by Moses or two Moses in that burning
bush is imputed
salvation is imputed
I it’s tremendously valuable but I
didn’t earn it you didn’t earn it Jesus
earned it on the cross and in
Resurrection it’s imputed to us it’s
given to us as if it’s ours as if we
earned it we own it just as much as if
we paid for it
we didn’t know I ordered it I couldn’t
pay I needed someone to take my sins
away and now I sing a brand new song
Amazing Grace Christ Jesus Paid the debt
that I could never pay
he imputed it to you and to me he gave
me something so valuable and so precious
it’s the Pearl above Christ the
scripture calls it as if it was ours all
along
wow
that’s what Moses saw in that burning
bush
that God was going to deliver his people
he saw that God was going to deliver
them from the Egyptians but foreshadowed
I believe was what God was going to do
to deliver all his children
from the wretchedness of this self-life
that keeps us in bondage until we find
Christ’s Liberation Peace Love Holiness
Justice and Truth
you see the burning bush really is a
type of the New Testament Church
we’re made holy like Christ is Holy and
he Blends and mends us together so that
we can function in his love and then
made one with Christ and one with each
other we become his church that he takes
is his bride and presents us to his
father the scripture says without any
spot or blemish or any such thing
Hallelujah well I’m excited about that
but here’s the deal it’s not just to the
church collectively
but it’s to the believer individually
that God imputes this holy condition
wow
so the burning bush
is a type of Holiness that Christ
was going to impute to us through the
cross and through the resurrection
God fills us
he speaks through us you see in a way we
are the burning bush
how could I have this Holy Spirit in me
the burning fire of God unless he had
cleansed me
unless he made me whole it burned me up
but the fire comes through me
and you
if you’re called according to his name
if you let the Lord Jesus live on the
inside of you the fire of God Burns
through you and you become
a burning bush
See Fire represents the Holy Spirit
George Fox the the first Quaker
he has a book if you get a chance
and it’s just fantastic
and it’s the book of Miracles
and a lot of people don’t know but you
know he was a man of Miracles he was
full of God how could he not help but be
full of Miracles
and if we’re full of God we’ll find that
our life is full of Miracles too you
just got to count them
The Coincidence is not always
coincidence it’s Divine Providence
give God the glory and the praise for
the wonderful things that happen in your
life
why are we not consumed do you remember
how he protected the children of Israel
when the death angel came through the
camp
they put the blood of a pure spotless
Lamb on the doorpost of their home and
it’s the blood of that lamb they kept
them safe so that the death angel would
pass over them and they’d be kept safe
and today that’s what keeps his children
safe in this world is the blood on the
doorpost of our heart
we’ll pick back up next week
talking more about this bush that I
believe
still Burns
[Laughter]
may it burn through us you see God spoke
through that fiery bush
and I believe he still wants to speak
through us today
as his church and his believers
being a type of that Burning Bush you
see we’re the only voice and image of
God that some people will ever see God
