God, Grant that I be more Vile.

Rejected by the Church of England, George Whitefield’s open-air field preaching was often labeled “vile” by critics. But he was listening to Christ, not critics. So Whitefield prayed with heaven’s fire: “If field preaching is to be vile, then Lord grant that I may be more vile.” (From Jack Jackson’s Offering Christ, p. 66)

What a powerful commitment! Whitefield wasn’t interested in playing religious games or seeking approval from the “official” church. He was consumed with passion to win souls to Christ. Even the church often prefers comfort and conformity over a charge to change. But these faithful words challenge us! Will we step outside the boundaries of normalcy to share the Gospel boldly? If it means more people hear about Jesus? Dare we be more “vile,” even in the eyes of religious mores and leadership?

I weary of playing games – I want to win people to Christ! Let’s pray for the Whitefield fire in our own lives and fellowship. Winning souls is not always pretty to those around us. It disrupts codes and traditions. But Proverbs 11:30 declares true wisdom: “He that winneth souls is wise.”
