I think quite often about manna. This was the miraculous substance that God used to provide for his children very long ago. Many interesting things about this substance. But suffice it to say it was a miraculous daily provision from God. One of the reasons that I think about it so much is because I feel like God still gives us Manna today. He makes miraculous daily provision for our lives.
One of the interesting properties of the manna was that it could not be stored. So even though God supplied a fresh abundant Supply each morning. It had to be gathered that day. So much of life is like this even now. God will take care of us. But we have to go out and do work to gather and apply it, in order to receive and enjoy His blessings.
The implications of this on our physical lives are plain. It influences everything we do and especially our work, which must be daily. We cannot live too long off of yesterday’s work. It cannot be stored. We must go back out in the field and gather fresh manna each day. Manna like life is designed to be a ongoing provision that requires our participation to Harvest.
The implications of what can be learned from manna are also very clear for our spiritual life. Daily we must seek God. Daily we must focus on Gathering and applying what he has for us, for it to be of benefit to us. When the prayer speaks of Daily Bread, this is what it means. The thing that people miss is that if you do not gather the Manna, it stays in the field.
Spiritual life is like that. Most people do not have the depth of spiritual experience with God that they would like to have. Because they do not daily go into the field and earnestly seek God’s spiritual provisions. Our search for God should not be lackadaisical. It should be as specific and purposeful as our daily feedings of literal food. There should be times that we concentrate on finding the substance of what God has for us. There should be times when we literally prepare this substance for our use. And there should be times that we ingest and enjoy the flavor of this wonderful provision. Daily and deliberately!
May God help you start, continue and develop the task of daily Gathering spiritual manna. It will absolutely change, transform and develop your life in unimaginable ways, if you will. Why not start today. Be deliberate about it. Set times for your Spiritual Development just like you do your physical nourishment.
We rarely miss meal times. The same should be said to be true of us, regarding our times of spiritual devotion, seeking and development.
Jesus is the new manna. Life with him is in many ways comparable to the children of Israel in the Old Testament Gathering their daily provision of manna. We are to Look to Him daily to find what He has for us and to receive from Him personally and specifically, His life. Jesus does not want us to know “about Him”. He wants us personally to receive and “know Him.” Just as each one of the children of Israel had together and consume the Manna for it to do them any good. Even so we must personally find Jesus to be our Divine word and allow Him to literally be, the life of our flesh and heart.
It is not that God wants us to learn about the manna. It is that God wants to literally be the Manna to us. Jesus does not want to be a theoretical concept or abstraction to us. Christ is disinterested in our theological Theory or religious talk. He wants to literally come into us and indwell us.
Do not miss God’s Supernatural blessing of manna. Invite Christ into your heart today. And start each day seeking him specifically and literally. And have a specific time each day when you think Him for the goodness that He does and will supply. He wants to be as real to you as the food you consume. Let Him be your daily Manna!
