Not just in sales but in every area of social interaction; learning to be deliberate and intentional in using people’s names will empower your communication. My friend Steve Gutzler tagged me with the nickname “Slam” in college. That really stuck with me. It resonated strongly with how I see myself and want to be seen by others. So strongly in fact, That many years later, I adopted it as my trade-name and marketplace image. 

Call me “Slam” and get my attention, because I feel like you know something about me. Many people feel this way. Learn the name tag that means something to people and call them by it. You will find that you will much more naturally gain favorable responses.

I have improved a lot in this area. But I still struggle some with names and memorizing them. But, if you struggle with remembering someone’s name. Don’t be ashamed to ask them, for their name again. Spit out the request. Don’t be shy about it.

I literally say “I would rather ask your name ten times to get it right, than not know.” They get the idea that they are important to you and that you really want to know them.

When I originally wrote this article, I had Sales thoughts in mind. But this practice is hugely important to anyone dealing with the public. Learning to unashamedly be concerned about people’s names will make you much more affable to them.
