What’s important to me.

Dear GutsIsTheKey reader, When I started to do my new year’s purposing; my heart wasn’t in it. So, for the first time in 7 years; I did not come out with what I felt was an earth shattering goal statement for the year. I couldn’t exactly explain what I was feeling, even to myself. But I know the ground I will cover in this BEAM, will help me move forward. Maybe, the thoughts will help you as well.

belated new years resolutions

Why come up with detailed goals and plans if there is a deep sense that something is missing. I think that is why I could not go through my annual refocusing. I felt a deep need to ask deeper questions. A need to take another look at my foundation; before building more structure on it.

I do not know that this BEAM answers my need for soul-searching but I am sure it will help. Before I launch out in more purposes; I want to make sure that what I am doing is true to what I believe and who I am. So this BEAM is a celebration of importance . A statement about some of the things that are important to me. Values that I would like to guide my “resolutions.”

1- Communicating, sharing and being God’s messenger is important to me.  At times, it is not profitable for me to be God’s messenger. Many times, what He thinks is not what people want to hear. But nonetheless, being a messenger of His truth is a priority to me. If it profits me AND if it does not. It is still a priority for me.

2- Helping people with substance abuse problems is important to me. This is a growing desire that dwells deeply in my mind and heart. Alcohol and drugs ruled my life, for most of my life. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I functioned very well in society and could convince you that I was a man who had a drink; not seeing the evidence that the drink had the man. I was lying to myself. The freedom that I experience today is the most wonderful thing in my life. I desire for many others to know this freedom that I have found. AND I intend to find ways to share it.

3- Standing up for the weak and the underdog is important to me. Most times it is easier to watch someone get whooped, than to stand up for them. But I can not and will not do this. Even if it costs me; I will fight for those who can not fight for themselves.

4- Accepting God’s will as more important than my own is important to me. These are words I would have used for most of my life but I did not mean them, like I do today. I pray more for His will to be done than my own. I really want to want what God wants. That is my #1 goal in life. That is important to me, even if it does not win me any marketing campaigns.

5- Being willing to fight when needed is important to me. Saying that you are willing to help people and rolling up your sleeve and getting in the ring with them are two different things. I want to do the latter.

6- Being a sought after speaking resource in inspirational &/or sales topics is important to me. I really want this bad. I am a talented sales manager, trainer. I am a talented speaker. No! I am an incredibly talented speaker. I want to speak like an artist wants to paint or a musician wants to sing or play an instrument. This has to figure in my career path, for me to be on track with what I think is important for me.

7- Pursuing and winning at a game plan to increase my income substantially is important to me. I have had two of my own businesses. I have had healthy sums of money. I have had. Right now, I am broke. Yep. Broke. But I don’t intend to stay that way. I want to utilize the wealth of God-given talents and experience that I have and recreate a winning income and financial future.

8- Being a competent top flight professional is important to me. I can never be a slick talking huckster. I can not and I will not swindle people out of money. I intend to earn my future income by excellent professionalism & leadership born of wisdom (which I have!!)

9- Patriotic duty to my constitutionally governed United States of America is important to me. The founding father’s said in the Declaration of Independence; “a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.” To hold true to this commitment of our founders is important to me.

10- Practicing optimism and a good outlook is important to me. Nobody likes to be around a sour pickle all the time. I don’t intend to be one.

11- Pursuing Jesus as my Lord is important to me. I am not just a monotheist. I am a Christian. It is important to me to be guided by Christ, in all I say and do.

12 – True Quaker values are important to me. God reveals Himself directly to me. I am not obligated to a pope, or any religious hierarchy. Clearness, Centering, The very real and Supernatural Manifestation of the Spirit, A testimony of peace, real living worship INSTEAD OF traditions, liturgy and required sacraments // is important to me. The equality of all human beings is important to me. I believe this way, because I am a Convinced Quaker, in a world where very few remain. (Yes, this has somewhat to do with why I wear the hat; even though this is not popularly practiced among Quakers anymore).

13- Gardening & Outside work is important to me. My dad raised me cutting tree’s and working outside. He taught me early how to raise a garden. I enjoy this. It keeps me near the land and near to God. I need both.

14 – Communing with nature and deer hunting are important to me. Ok. In many respects I am conservative but I am a free-thinker and do not ascribe to any one ideology totally. I love nature and the way that I practice this is by participating in the outdoors. I hunt. I fish. I am interested in game land preservation. I spend time outside; just to spend time outside. My future plans must include this dimension. I would love to find some way for my speaking talents and my outdoor interests to merge. But this seems like a long-shot, currently.

15 – Being productive and creative is important to me. If the way we are doing it works; I will not recreate the wheel but I may play with its design. I am always looking for ways to create and produce more. I write prolifically and this will continue.

16- Being good to my family is important to me.

17- Having the channels open, so God can speak through me is important to me. Wow! This is huge for me. I want to grow my conscious contact with God. I want to be a channel, He can speak to. He does and I want this to continue. So daily devotions, centering, prayer and worship will always be important to me and figure principally in what I do.

The Touch of God

18- Being the best friend I can be to my best friends is important to me. I am fiercely loyal to my friends; EVEN when it is personally costly. This will continue to be true.

19- Always being willing to stand up for God is important to me. In my concept of God; He died for me. So, I will live for Him.

Attention to Creator versus critics

20 – Teaching Shotokan karate is important to me. I have trained 30+ years. One of the way’s I can give to others in my life is to teach karate. Especially to the young.

21- Staying involved inspiring the lives of young people is important to me. I was a youth minister earlier in life. I have always treasured this experience. I still hear from some of the young people today, that I made a difference in their lives. I always want to do this. I see Karate as the primary platform of influence, to allow me to continue to work in this capacity.

22- Having fun and enjoying life is important to me. Every day is a good day to smile. I have great joy in my heart. I am going to experience as much genuine happiness as I can, while following the pursuits that are important to me.

23 – Being true to my wife is important to me. Yeah, I mean that.  I pray God help me do it; regardless of my path.

24- Being faithful to my friends is important to me. Same as above.

a helping hand

25- Having a deeply intimate, supernatural relationship with God is important to me. Last but not least. I have experienced God in an incredibly sensitive, dynamic and powerful way. He shakes me, moves me, convicts me, and guides me. I want to remember that a relationship with God is like clay relating to the potter. There is no telling what God can & will do. He is able to do things with me, that are more profound than I can imagine. I always feel like a moth approaching the flame, when I communicate with God. He is so powerful, immense & mighty. Still, it is also like being in the hands of a surgeon dealing with God; He is so careful, detailed and precise. Whatever, my life holds; I want the delicate, amazing and thrilling relationship with The Divine Master to continue and grow.

That’s what is important to me!
